Art in architecture: How walls shape public spaces

Today, it is more important than ever not only to create buildings, but also to anchor them in their surroundings - to give them an identity. It is about the stories they tell in order to become part of the community. Large-format art plays a central role in this. It transforms anonymous façades into eye-catchers and gives spaces their very own personality.

KlebeBande has been involved with art on buildings and façade design since it was founded and is constantly finding new ways to transform bare walls into inspiring indoor or outdoor spaces through artistic design. Whether urban walls, halls, lobby walls or stairwells - these are the things that matter when it comes to art on buildings and murals:

Murals change urban spaces

Murals are more than just large-scale pictures - they create emotions, set accents and change the perception of places. A gray house wall can become a canvas that tells stories. A monotonous office wall becomes a work of art that stimulates the mind. In public spaces, murals have a transformative power: they can enhance urban districts, create points of identification and connect neighborhoods.

The KlebeBande's public façade projects are a good example of this. In Potsdam, they designed the wall of a youth center. With their creative wall art, they not only created an aesthetic highlight, but also a meeting point for local residents and a place that proudly refers to the community. Art thus becomes a bridge between the building and the people who surround it. -> more art in public spaces

Unlike public buildings, residential and office buildings are not obliged to have art on buildings. However, it is particularly important for companies that build in urban areas that their buildings are accepted and integrated into the neighborhood. The external appearance of a building contributes a great deal to the people who work or live there feeling comfortable. Murals have a very special effect in public spaces, reflecting the character of a building or an entire neighborhood. KlebeBande has set itself the task of rethinking urban spaces and making their significance visible. The result is art with a social value.

One of these remarkable projects is "The Colorful Tree" on Hausvogteiplatz in Berlin. Covering an area of 500 m², this mural shows a prism-like kaleidoscope of leaves that represents the symbiosis of nature and the city. The KlebeBande's colorful murals can also be found at Holzmarkt on the Spree. In most projects, residents are actively involved in the concept development - their ideas and wishes flow directly into the design. The result is bright facades that celebrate the cultural diversity of the neighborhood and bring the public space to life. Artistic building design thus becomes a visual bridge that brings communities together and enhances urban districts. -> more about our façade projects

Corporate art in public space

What applies to residential buildings is just as useful for office buildings and commercial spaces, as these are often perceived as foreign objects in densely populated areas. Art and color make it easier to integrate them into the neighborhood, turning them into striking focal points or even symbols of a district in the long term. KlebeBande transformed a previously inconspicuous passageway in Leibnizstrasse in Berlin-Charlottenburg into an "urban jungle" with peacock motifs and golden accents. This project for the apartment rental company Stay Urban created an aesthetic highlight in the neighborhood. Another example is the artistic façade design for the Atlas high-rise in Munich, whose exterior walls were designed by KlebeBande in gold, black and white with classic motifs in a modern look. And the design doesn't end at the front door ...

Murals are a powerful tool not only in public spaces, but also in large interior spaces. They give offices and buildings a visual identity and bring brands to life in stores. A blank wall becomes a message through an artistic mural - be it to make the corporate culture visible or to inspire employees and customers.

A good example of this is the Cyber Valley project by KlebeBande in Tübingen. Here, large-scale, futuristic designs inspired by technologies such as Lidar scans can be seen on various walls, visually underlining the innovative power of the research center. The concept creates a uniform, visionary atmosphere across all floors, from the lobby, stairs and elevators to the workplaces and social areas, which perfectly matches the building and its purpose.

Such projects show how art and corporate identity can merge harmoniously to create spaces that are both functional and inspiring.

Art for schools: creative spaces for education and encounters

KlebeBande is particularly committed to designing creative spaces for children and young people - both in school buildings, gyms and schoolyards. With its projects, it brings color and inspiration to educational environments and creates places that are not only functional, but also motivating and identity-forming.

One of their favorite examples is the façade design at the Albert Schweizer Gymnasium 2020 in Crailsheim. Here, KlebeBande transformed a plain wall into a vibrant work of art with geometric shapes, iconic characters and bold colors. The design was conceived to stimulate the students' creativity and liven up the school day.

A comprehensive art concept was developed for the new gymnasium at Grace Hopper Comprehensive School in Teltow in 2023. The colourful graphic wall elements symbolize the joy of movement and make the space a place for students and teachers to work and be active. The basis for the different lines and overlaps are the various innovative sports on offer.

Wall art in schools not only improves the ambience, but also sets an example of community and appreciation. It transforms places of learning into spaces that inspire pupils, teachers and parents alike. Art and imagination become an integral part of school life.

The creative process: from idea to artwork

Behind every mural is a detailed, creative process. At KlebeBande, this begins with an intensive exchange with the customer. Whether it is a company, a public institution or a neighborhood - the focus is on the wishes and ideas of those involved and, above all, those who live or work on site.

Concept development is followed by design phases in which increasingly detailed sketches are created. KlebeBande attaches great importance to ensuring that the artwork not only impresses visually, but also fulfills functional and spatial requirements. Various techniques are used in the implementation - from classic paintings to mixed-media approaches.

Sustainability: materials and techniques

Sustainability is an important aspect of the KlebeBande's work. When selecting materials, they make sure that they are environmentally friendly and durable. Low-emission paints, recycled materials and robust techniques ensure that the artworks will last for years while protecting the environment.

In a façade project in Dresden, for example, a special weatherproof paint was used that not only ensures brilliant colors, but also makes cleaning easier. This means that the mural remains an eye-catcher in the long term - without any environmental impact.

Facade art creates a shared identity

Murals are much more than large-scale works of art. They give buildings and urban spaces a personality, tell stories and connect people with the places where they live and work. KlebeBande has set itself the task of enriching spaces with its murals - whether in urban environments or corporate buildings. This results in works that are not only visually impressive, but also have a deeper meaning.

Whether for the community or for brand spaces: with its creative concepts, sustainable materials and focus on individuality, KlebeBande shows how art can complement architecture and bring places to life.

The professionals of the KlebeBande are masters at bringing spaces to life through art. Over the years, the Berlin collective has developed its work - from experimental tape art projects to impressive murals and art on buildings. Whether huge exterior facades, urban squares or office design: KlebeBande specializes in transforming bare walls into visual highlights.
